Ultimate Guide to Safe Sun Fun with Baby

The days are getting longer, the weather is warming up (finally!), and that glorious sun is calling us outdoors. If you’re anything like me, you’re itching to get out and enjoy it with your little one. And while "sun's out, buns out" is a fun mantra for us adults, when it comes to our precious babies, a little extra planning goes a long way to ensure all that fun in the sun is safe fun.

Especially for our tiniest tots (under 6 months), their delicate skin needs special protection. So, before we dive into my must-have gear, let's cover some golden rules for enjoying those rays responsibly.

Crucial Sun Safety First: Tips for Your Little Ray of Sunshine (Especially Under 6 Months)

When Addy was a tiny baby, I learned just how sensitive their skin is. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has some fantastic advice that I always keep in mind, and it’s especially crucial for infants under 6 months old:

  1. Seek Shade, Shade, and More Shade: This is your number one defense! Keep babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight as much as possible. Think shady trees, umbrellas, stroller canopies, and pop-up tents (more on that soon!). Plan outdoor time for before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m. when the sun's rays are less intense.

  2. Dress for Success (Sun Success, That Is!): Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats are your best friends. Tightly woven fabrics offer more protection. Look for clothing with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating for an extra layer of security.

  3. Sunscreen Smarts: For babies under 6 months, the AAD generally recommends avoiding widespread sunscreen use. Instead, rely on shade and protective clothing. If a small amount of sunscreen is needed on limited areas (like the back of the hands or tops of feet) and shade/clothing aren't fully available, consult your pediatrician first about using a minimal amount of baby-safe, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. For babies over 6 months, sunscreen is a go-to – apply generously 15-30 minutes before going out and reapply every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.

  4. Watch for Overheating: Babies can overheat quickly. Make sure they’re drinking plenty of fluids (breast milk or formula for younger babies), are dressed appropriately, and aren't getting flushed or fussy in the heat.

  5. Eye Protection is Key: Don't forget those little peepers! Sunglasses that block UV rays are important from an early age.

With those safety essentials in mind, let’s talk about some amazing products that can make your sunny adventures with baby much easier and safer!

    • Why it's a Must-Have: Whether you’re at the park, the beach, or a friend's backyard, this mat provides a clean, comfortable, and stylish spot for baby to play, have tummy time, or even serve as an impromptu (and pretty!) changing mat. It’s easy to wipe down and folds up conveniently.

Making a Splash: Introducing Baby to Water Safely

Now that the weather is turning nicer, many of us are thinking about pools and introducing our little ones to the water! This is such a fun milestone. We started taking Addy to British Swim School when she was just 3.5 months old. It was a fantastic way to get her comfortable in the water and for us to start practicing safe water habits early on. I highly recommend looking into local infant swim programs if you're interested!

When you're ready to take your baby to the pool or beach, here are a couple of my go-to tips and products:

  • The Double Diaper Duty: For ultimate peace of mind (and pool cleanliness!), we always double-layer Addy's swim diapers. We start with a disposable swim diaper – we personally love Coterie Swim Diapers for their great fit – and then layer a snug-fitting reusable swim diaper like this one from Amazon over top. This combo offers excellent containment!

  • Safe & Shady Lounging: Addy absolutely loves lounging in her Baby Spring Float Activity Center with Canopy. It provides a secure spot for her to kick around and enjoy the water, with the all-important canopy for sun protection.

  • Protect Those Peepers: Don't forget sunglasses! Baby's eyes are sensitive too. Addy rocks her polarized sunglasses – they’re durable, offer 100% UV protection, and actually stay on!

Getting out to enjoy the beautiful sunny weather with your baby can create some of the sweetest memories. With a little preparation and the right gear, you can ensure these adventures are safe, comfortable, and fun for everyone. So, slather on that sunscreen (for yourself and babies over 6 months!), grab those hats, and get ready to make some sunshine-filled memories!
